Fourvière Hôtel is a 4-star hotel-restaurant located in the Fourvière district of Lyon, in the Rhône department of Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes. Opened in 2015, it occupies the former convent of the Visitation Sainte-Marie de Fourvière, within a 19th-century building in the Roman-Byzantine style.

The site is connected to the history of the Order of the Visitation of Sainte-Marie, founded in 1610 by Sainte Jeanne de Chantal and Saint François de Sales. The order established several convents in Lyon from 1615 onward. In 1850, the Visitandines of La Croix-Rousse purchased land on Fourvière hill jointly with the Carmelites of Lyon on Rue du Juge-de-Paix, about 500 meters from the Basilica Notre-Dame de Fourvière. The land was mainly planted with vineyards and orchards and included several buildings of unspecified dates. The Dames de la Visitation kept part of the land that remained unbuilt and later acquired additional parcels around the initial property. The convent design was entrusted to Lyonnais architect Pierre Bossan, who also designed the Basilica Notre-Dame de Fourvière. Bossan built the original convent following the order’s 1624 plan-type, inspired by Roman-Byzantine style. The old convent was later restructured by the group é-hotel and Axe Architecture.

From Convent Land to Fourviere Hotel

The site of Fourviere Hotel was first connected to the Order of the Visitation of Sainte-Marie, founded in 1610 by Sainte Jeanne de Chantal and Saint Francois de Sales. The order established several convents in Lyon from 1615 onward.
