Institutional History and Territorial Expansion

Le Grand T traces its history to an association created in 1970 under the name Maison de la culture de Nantes. It was directed by Jacques Vitaly until 1975, then by Jacques Couturier and Loic Vollard from 1975 to 1978. During this period, the institution concentrated theatrical activity in Nantes at the theatre Graslin and the salle Paul-Fort, rue Basse-Porte. In 1977, it created a Decentralization service that extended performances into the Loire-Atlantique department, relying on territorial delegates to diffuse productions beyond the city. It also developed amateur practices in theater, photography, and plastic arts through an Animation service. In 1978, it became the Maison de la Culture de Nantes et de Loire-Atlantique.

After a period of crisis, the institution was dissolved and then reconstituted by the Departement de Loire-Atlantique, which assumed sole funding. Its missions, employees, and assets were later transferred to the public cultural cooperation establishment, at which point it was renamed Le Grand T, theatre de Loire-Atlantique. Catherine Blondeau was confirmed as director for a five-year term.
