Place Pey-Berland is a square in Bordeaux, in the French department of Gironde. It is located near Cours d’Alsace et Lorraine and Palais Rohan. The square takes its name from Pey Berland, the Gascon form of Pierre Berland, who was elected archbishop of Bordeaux in 1430. A part of the Gallo-Roman ramparts crossed the current site, and archaeological excavations carried out from 1999 before the installation works for the Bordeaux tramway uncovered an ancient porch and the cellars of old houses. The excavations also showed that buildings around the square were once much closer to the cathedral than they are today. The area is bordered by several monuments, including Cathédrale Saint-André, tour Pey-Berland, Palais Rohan, the hôtel de ville de Bordeaux, and the pôle juridique et judiciaire of the University of Bordeaux. In 2021, trees were planted in the middle of the pedestrian zone.

History and Archaeology of Place Pey-Berland

Place Pey-Berland takes its name from Pey Berland, the Gascon form of Pierre Berland, who was elected archbishop of Bordeaux in 1430. The site also preserves traces of older urban history: a section of the Gallo-Roman ramparts once crossed the current square. From 1999, archaeological excavations were carried out before work on the Bordeaux tramway, revealing an ancient porch and the cellars of old houses. These findings show that the area has long been built up and has changed over time. Buildings around the square were once much closer to the cathedral than they are today. In 2021, Pierre Hurmic decided to plant trees in the middle of the pedestrian zone of the square, adding a new element to its present use and appearance.

Place Pey-Berland is surrounded by several monuments. These include Cathdrale Saint-Andre and tour Pey-Berland, as well as Palais Rohan and the hotel de ville de Bordeaux. The pole juridique et judiciaire de la faculte de droit et de science politique de l'universite de Bordeaux is also among the monuments in the area. A statue in homage to Jacques Chaban-Delmas was installed north of the cathedral, facing Palais Rohan. Commissioned from Jean Cardot, the statue is 6 meters high and was inaugurated on a Monday. The city spent 120000 euros on the work.
