Église Notre-Dame-de-l'Espérance is a Catholic parish church in Cannes, Alpes-Maritimes, France, dedicated to Notre-Dame d'Espérance and located on Place de la Castre in the Suquet district. Construction began in 1521 with funds from the people of Cannes and continued for about a century before completion in 1627. It replaced the fortified church of Notre-Dame-du-Puy, built by monks of the Abbaye de Lérins; this earlier church became the Sainte-Anne chapel and was later abandoned by parishioners. The building was delivered for worship in 1632, dedicated on the feast of the Annunciation, and consecrated in 1678. Its history also includes assignments of the chapels to artisan confraternities from Cannes, a pastoral visit by Bishop Godeau, restoration work and a marble pavement offering in 1886, and the crowning of the statue of Notre Dame d'Espérance in 1932. Architecturally, it is a Gothic church with a Renaissance porch, a square Romanesque-style bell tower, seventeenth-century chapels, a large Italian organ from Pavia dated 1857, and other notable devotional and artistic elements.

Location and Dedication
Eglise Notre-Dame-de-l'Espérance is a Catholic parish church in Cannes, in the Alpes-Maritimes department of France. It is dedicated to Notre-Dame d'Espérance and is located on Place de la Castre in the Suquet district. The church's setting in this part of Cannes places it within one of the city's identified urban areas, while its dedication gives it a clear religious identity within the local parish context.
Construction and Historical Development
Construction of the church began in 1521, financed by the people of Cannes, and continued for about one hundred years until its completion in 1627. It replaced the fortified church of Notre-Dame-du-Puy, which had been built by the monks of the Abbey of Lerins. After the new church was finished, Notre-Dame-du-Puy became the Sainte-Anne chapel and was later abandoned by parishioners. The church was delivered for worship in 1632 and dedicated to Notre-Dame de l Esperance on the feast of the Annunciation. Its chapels date from the seventeenth century, and the chapters were assigned to different artisan confraternities from Cannes. During a pastoral visit, Bishop Godeau entered the church with a Te Deum chant. The church was consecrated in 1678. In 1886, it underwent restoration and received a marble pavement offering. In 1932, the statue of Notre Dame d Esperance was crowned by pontifical authorization from Pope Pius XI.
Architectural Features and Interior Works
The Eglise Notre-Dame-de-l'Espérance combines several historical architectural styles. Its main structure is Gothic, while the porch is designed in Renaissance style and the bell tower is square-shaped in a Romanesque style. The church also includes lateral chapels linked to artisan confraternities, which were responsible for their decoration.
Inside, the church contains a number of notable works and fittings. Above the entrance is a large Italian organ from Pavia dated 1857, with a Neo-Gothic case made in France. The organ has 30 stops, two manuals, and a pedalboard, and it was retouched in 1921, 1939, 1962, and 1974. A partial restoration was carried out in 2014.
Among the interior artworks are a rare Burgundian sculpture showing Saint Anne, the Virgin, and the Child Jesus in the baptismal font chapel, and a wooden statue of Saint Anne dating from the 15th century. The Saint-Pierre chapel contains an altar entirely made of carved wood, while the Saint-Joseph chapel has a painting of the death of Joseph between the Virgin and Christ. The church also features a pulpit with panels representing the four evangelists and a carved wooden Christ sculpture.
