Place Louis-Pradel is a square in the Terreaux district of Lyon, France, in the 1st arrondissement. It connects the city centre, including the city hall and Place des Terreaux, to the Rhône quays. The square is backed on its north side by the hill of la Croix-Rousse and lies at the northern end of rue de la République. Its south side overlooks the Opéra, with its modern dome designed by Jean Nouvel, and the entrance to the hôtel de ville bordering place de la Comédie. The square is accessible by lines A and C of the Lyon metro via Hôtel de Ville-Louis Pradel station.
The place was created by widening rue Puits-Gaillot during metro construction on the Presqu’île, which also required demolishing many buildings on the block where the square and underground Parking Opéra now stand. New buildings border the square, including works by Bertrand de Lagarde and Charles Delfante, and the Hôtel de Ville Annex by Jean-Gabriel Mortamet. It was named by the municipal council on 7 March 1977 in reference to Louis Pradel, mayor of Lyon from 1957 to 1976, who died in office. The square later became fully pedestrian and has also gained worldwide renown in skateboarding. It has undergone several redevelopment and maintenance projects, including paving replacement in 2011 and lighting changes in 2025.

Naming of Place Louis-Pradel
The naming of Place Louis-Pradel was approved by the municipal council on March 7, 1977. The square was named after Louis Pradel, who served as mayor of Lyon from 1957 to 1976. According to the odonymy records, Pradel died in office in 1976, and the square's name reflects this municipal decision made the following year.
Formation and Later Redevelopment of Place Louis-Pradel
Place Louis-Pradel was created by widening rue Puits-Gaillot during metro construction on the Presqu ile. According to Histoire, the work required the demolition of many buildings on the urban block that now includes the square and the underground Parking Opera. New buildings now border the place. To the north are buildings by Bertrand de Lagarde and Charles Delfante, including the immeuble Cesar, the Lyon Police Commissariat for the 1st and 4th arrondissements, and 21 place Tolozan. To the west stands the Hotel de Ville Annex by Jean-Gabriel Mortamet, with a concrete facade and an accompanying architecture that blends the Croix-Rousse slopes and city hall facades.
The place became fully pedestrian during Michel Noir's mandate in the 1993-1994 Plan Presqu ile. Rue Puits-Gaillot was then turned into a one-way street giving access to quai Jean Moulin, whereas circulation lanes had originally run through the center of the place. Histoire describes rue Puits-Gaillot as little known and isolated, with limited visibility.
In terms of public perception, the place gained worldwide renown in skateboarding thanks to famous French skateboarders. Nearly twenty years after the metro construction was completed, the paving slabs were replaced in May 2011 to secure the ground. Later projects also concerned the site: in 2019, the Metropole de Lyon planned a major redevelopment including 60 trees, a water mirror, lawns, and the relocation of the Ipousteguy fountain. A 2023 redevelopment project, budgeted at 17 million euros, was cancelled by the new Green executive. In 2025, the municipal plan called for reactivating the Ipousteguy fountain after about ten years without water, but not the water stream, and the street lamps were replaced to increase lighting brightness.
