Lille

Place de la République is a square in Lille that was created on the fossés d’enceinte of the former fortifications at the porte Notre-Dame location. It was initially named place Napoléon-III after the enlargement of Lille in 1858, and it was later renamed place de la République following the fall of the Second Empire. The square lies at the center of Lille’s new perimeter after the city’s expansion. It is bordered to the northwest by the Préfecture de Lille, whose construction began in 1865, and to the southeast by the Palais des beaux-arts de Lille, whose construction began in 1885. The square was quickly surrounded by bourgeois buildings in the neighboring streets and along Boulevard de la Liberté. In 1983, it was transformed from a large parking lot after the construction of the Lille metro, and an open-air amphitheater overlooking République - Beaux-Arts station was created there.

Place de la Republique was initially named place Napoleon-III after the Lille extension of 1858. It was created on the fosses d'enceinte of the former fortifications at the porte Notre-Dame location, and Place Richebe was established at the same time on the same site. Positioned at the center of Lille's new perimeter after the city enlargement, it occupied a key area in the reorganized urban fabric. The square was first called place Napoleon-III until the fall of the Second Empire, after which it was renamed place de la Republique.

The square is bordered to the northwest by the Prefecture of Lille, whose construction began in 1865, and to the southeast by the Palais des beaux-arts de Lille, whose construction began in 1885. It was quickly surrounded by bourgeois buildings in the neighboring streets and along Boulevard de la Liberte, giving the area a distinct urban character.

In 1983, after the construction of the Lille metro, the square was transformed from a large parking lot. At that time, an open-air amphitheater overlooking Republique - Beaux-Arts station was created. Today, the site is also identified in Lille's IRIS statistical zones, registered as LT09, LV06, and part of LV01, established in 1999.
