Musée Angladon

Musée Angladon is an art museum in the Old Town of Avignon, located in the Hôtel de Massilian at 5 Rue Laboureur. The house was designed by Jean Péru in 1694 and takes its name from the Massilian family, who lived there in the 18th century. Jean Angladon-Dubrujeaud and Paulette Martin moved the collection there and lived in the house until their deaths in 1979 and 1988. They left the house and collections to be preserved for the public, and the Fondation Angladon-Dubrujeaud was established in 1993 for that purpose. The museum opened on 15 November 1996 after renovation for museum use. Its ground-floor gallery rooms present main works from the 19th and 20th century painting collection, including works by Paul Cézanne, Edgar Degas, Vincent van Gogh, Alfred Sisley, Amedeo Modigliani, Édouard Manet, and Édouard Vuillard.

From a Private Collection to a Public Museum

The collection associated with Musee Angladon was assembled over several decades by Geschichte, who lived mainly in Paris and its surroundings. During this period, Geschichte also donated extensive libraries on art and modern literature to the University of Paris. After Geschichte's death in 1929, a significant art collection was left to Jeanne Doucet and Marie Dubrujeaud. Some important works were sold in the 1930s, while other pieces were given to the French state. In 1958, Jean Dubrujeaud inherited the remaining family part of the collection.

Jean Angladon-Dubrujeaud, a grandnephew of Geschichte, founded Musee Angladon with Paulette Martin. They moved the collection to the Old Town of Avignon and acquired the Hotel de Massilian at 5 Rue Laboureur. The house, designed by Jean Peru in 1694, takes its name from the Massilian family, who lived there in the 18th century. Jean Angladon-Dubrujeaud lived in the house until his death in 1979, and Paulette Martin remained there until her death in 1988. Both willed the house and collections to be preserved for the public. The Fondation Angladon-Dubrujeaud was established in 1993 for this purpose, and the museum opened on November 15, 1996, after renovation for museum use.

Collections and Interior Display

Mus?e Angladon presents its collection across multiple gallery rooms on the ground floor, where the main works of the 19th and 20th century painting collection are exhibited. The selection includes Nature morte au pot de gres by Paul Cezanne, Deux danseuses by Edgar Degas, Wagons de chemin de fer a Arles by Vincent van Gogh, Paysage de neige a Louveciennes by Alfred Sisley, La blouse rose by Amedeo Modigliani, Le lapin by Edouard Manet, La porte entrebaillee by Edouard Vuillard, Sancho Panca by Honore Daumier, Rose dans un verre by Andre Derain, and the gouache Arlequin assis by Pablo Picasso. Works by Odilon Redon and Tsuguharu Foujita are also included, along with Nature morte a la raie et au panier d oignons by Jean Simeon Chardin. In addition to the paintings, the museum displays the former living quarters of Jean Angladon-Dubrujeaud and Paulette Martin on the first floor. Some rooms are arranged in styles from the Renaissance to the 18th century, with furniture and artworks from their respective periods. The museum also contains mementos from the former apartments of Jacques Doucet, including the interior picture Grand Salon de Jacques Doucet rue de la Ville-l Eveque by Walter Gay.

Collections and Exhibitions

Musee Angladon presents a wide range of material in its collections and exhibitions. Among the non-European works on display are Chinese porcelain, silk paintings, and African wooden masks from the Loma people of Guinea and the Fang people of Gabon. The museum also houses an extensive library, including a collection of 18th and 19th century drawings. Within this drawing collection are sheets by Francois Boucher and Juste-Aurele Meissonnier. In addition to its permanent holdings, the museum regularly hosts temporary exhibitions and lectures on various art fields, with a particular focus on printmaking and book illustration.
