Zénith de Lille is a performance hall located in Lille, in the French department of Nord, beside the Lille Grand Palais congress center. The building was designed and built by Rem Koolhaas and the agency OMA, with agency Delhay, scenography firm dUCKS scéno, and acoustician Renz van Luxemburg. It opened on 3 December 1994 with a ZZ Top concert during the Antenna album tour.

The hall was part of a broader project linked to the political will of Pierre Mauroy to make Lille a major European metropolis. Its development began in the 1980s. The complex was conceived as a contemporary, functional space, largely using concrete, and intended to host varied events for different audiences over limited periods. Zénith de Lille hosts all types of events, and its programming has included numerous francophone artists and groups, among them Johnny Hallyday and Jean-Jacques Goldman. The site where it stands also forms part of a wider urban history linked to former fortifications, later vacant land, and subsequent redevelopment near the city center.

From Vacant Land to a Modern Event Complex

The land on which Zenith de Lille and Lille Grand Palais now stand was once part of dismantled fortifications, with the area lying opposite the porte de Tournai, which was destroyed in 1924. In the 1920s, the city of Lille defended a project for a through station to replace the terminus station, but the wider area between the Paris-Lille railway line at rue Javary, the commercial fair buildings from 1933, and the postal check building at boulevard Emile Dubuisson remained largely vacant, apart from a youth hostel.

The site later became associated with the exhibition of Social Progress, organized at Roubaix and Lille. The mayors' association of Nord and East intended the event to present industrial and social renewal twenty years after the end of the First World War. The exhibition was inaugurated by commerce minister Fernand Gentin and later visited by President Albert Lebrun before a large crowd. Its success led to several months of concerts and conferences, but the declaration of war brought the exhibition and its hopes to an early end.

After the provisional exhibition buildings were destroyed, the land became a parking area from the 1950s, and a bridge over boulevard Emile Dubuisson was built in the 1970s. The space, close to the city center, was seen as an opportunity for better use. The Lille Grand Palais and Zenith de Lille complex was then realized by the Dutch architect Rem Koolhaas. Lille Grand Palais was inaugurated in 1994, and Koolhaas designed a contemporary hall using concrete to create a functional and neutral space adaptable to different events for limited periods. Zenit de Lille itself was inaugurated on 3 December 1994 with a ZZ Top concert during the Antenna album tour.

Zénith de Lille has hosted a wide range of performances, with its programming including many francophone artists and groups as well as international acts. Among the performers listed are Johnny Hallyday, Jean-Jacques Goldman, Alain Souchon, Veronique Sanson, Vanessa Paradis, -M-, Charles Aznavour, Lara Fabian, Bigflo et Oli, Aya Nakamura, Damien Saez, Etienne Daho, and Sofiane Pamart. Jean-Jacques Goldman also recorded the live album Un tour ensemble at Zénith during his 2002 tour.
