Avenue des Frères-Lumière is a street in the Monplaisir district of Lyon, France. It honors Auguste and Louis Lumière, French industrialists, and commemorates the brothers’ major role in the invention of cinema. The road begins at boulevard des Tchécoslovaques, behind université Jean-Moulin, and descends to the north-east toward place d’Arsonval. It crosses place Ambroise-Courtois, where the Institut Lumière is located. Formerly the residence of Antoine Lumière, father of Auguste and Louis Lumière, the building is now a museum. The avenue also crosses the Monplaisir neighborhood and is served by the line D metro stations Sans Souci, Monplaisir - Lumière, and Grange Blanche. Historically, it lies in the extension of Grande rue de la Guillotière and was continued by montée des Sablons in Lyon. It was part of the former Grenoble road before the creation of cours Gambetta and cours Albert-Thomas, became the main street of the Monplaisir subdivision in 1828, and received its current name by decision of the Lyon municipal council.
