Fort Lamothe, now Caserne Sergent Blandan

Fort Lamothe, formerly named Fort Lamothe and now known as Caserne Sergent Blandan, is a former military barracks in Lyon. It was built between 1831 and 1853 under the direction of General Rohault de Fleury and required significant earthworks during construction. The site was part of a group of forts protecting the city of Lyon, and it included the château de la Motte for officer housing. At the time of its construction, the barracks located in the northern part of the site was the longest in France.

The structure later lost strategic importance after the creation of Lyon’s second belt fortifications by General Séré de Rivières. It was then transformed into barracks to house soldiers from the forts of Charpennes, Brotteaux, and Colombier. In 1942, it was renamed Sergent Blandan in honor of Jean Pierre Hippolyte Blandan, during the centenary of his death. The complex includes a place d’armes, four bastions, approximately fifty buildings, an arsenal, and barracks measuring 420 meters long.
